C.C.B.E 2012 September 20, 21, 22, 23
Horseshoe Resort Barrie, Ontario, Canada

They say true friends show themselves in tough times. We'll the last couple of years have been tough, and we at the CCBE have discovered who our true friends are...pretty much the same people they have always been, along with a couple of new ones we've picked up along the way.

This past 2011 C.C.B.E was our 60th anniversary and proved true the old saying that practice makes perfect! Collectively we may not be the most creative group of people you'll come across, but we've found something that serves our membership well and we are clever\lazy enough to stick with it. From Thursday's Work Shops to Saturday night's steaks and Sunday's membership meeting everything seem to run without a hitch. Even Saturday's weather was close to ideal, and while we may not have control over the weather, I've learned from successful corporate executives everywhere to not let that stop me from taking credit for something others view as a success.

I find myself impressed with the loyalty and commitment our sponsors exhibit each year with their contributions to our annual conference. Although there has been a slight increase in our registration fees over the past couple of years, the monies contributed by our sponsors cover the vast majority of the costs incurred to put on our conference and without their generous and reliable support our conference would fade from memory as fast as a David Spade movie.

I also know from personal experience that it is getting harder for attendees to get time off and get the funding required to make the trek out to Horseshoe Valley each fall. While many corporations talk the talk about their employees being their core asset, it seems in tough economic times investing in technical employees becomes harder to justify. So while there are sacrifices and difficulties for attendees to overcome in order to attend our conference, free food and the Vendor suites go a long way to salve wounds incurred from extended periods of time on knees in the GM's office.

So a big thank-you to everyone who was able to attend this years CCBE conference. It was a special year for the CCBE as we celebrated our 60th anniversary. Our anniversary seemed to inspire a few trips down memory lane with everything from a terrific article in Broadcast Dialogue by Trevor Joice dedicated to CCBE's long history and many of the people who were involved in it's early days to Howard Christensen's Keynote address which spent some time looking back at the history of Broadcast Dialogue, the CCBE, and our industry as a whole.

As special as our membership is as a whole, it's not easy for anyone to standout from the group. Congratulations again to Martin Marcotte, winner of the Rhode and Schwarz Engineering Excellence Award, Ron Paley our Bob Norton Ambassador of the Year, Robert “Bob” Latreille for his lifetime Achievement Award, and Nathaniel Deshpande winner of the McCurdy Bursary. I hope they all enjoy basking in their awards. I also hope our more seasoned membership will avoid telling Nathaniel what's in store for him for the next few decades so he can live the dream a little longer.

How is it that the CCBE Conference still maintains it relevancy 60 years after some brave souls attempted the first one? From the vendors perspective, our wise supporters have learned a fundamental lesson of business and that is advertising works, targeted marketing works better and targeted marketing coupled with free food and alcohol is almost evilly efficient at moving product.

From the attendees perspective, the format of the conference targets the one thing that keeps many of us returning to work each day despite accountants and managers of other departments. The one thing that never seems to get old is the innate satisfaction of learning new things. Whether it’s learning about the details of a new technological advance or of the products that deliver the technology, learning is satisfying. Maintaining old friendships and making new ones while learning new things is almost decadently enjoyable.

Speaking of history, learning and having fun, if you can be in the area, The Hammond Museum of Radio is having an Open House for broadcast professionals between 2pm and 5pm on December 3, 2011. The museum is located 595 Southgate Road Guelph, Ontario. You can find more information at http://www.hammondmuseumofradio.org . It'll give you one more thing to talk about at the 2012 conference.

Just before I sign off I'd like to send out a quick “Get Well Soon” wish to one of our past presidents, Paul Firminger. Paul had a small issue that required him to lie down for the better part of the day and watch TV. Unlike myself, Paul viewed this as a situation that needed correction and is now recuperating from the appropriate procedure. I hope he recovers by next September as we need him up and about so we can put him to work at next years conference.

See you then,

Lorne Anderson
